How We Are Different
Most estate planning attorneys end the process of planning once the documents are signed and delivered. Clients take their plan documents home, file them away in a drawer and never look at them again. Years later, they have little idea of how their plan works, what goals are included and whether any changes are needed.
Most often there has been little or no “funding” of the plan. No one has taken responsibility for making that your assets follow your plan. This part of the process is critically important because if title and beneficiary designations are not coordinated with your plan, it is unlikely that your plan will work the way you expect and want it to.
In the traditional estate planning model, no one keeps in touch with you to let you know about changes in the law or to learn about changes in your life that could make your old plan ineffective.
Over the past 13 years I have reviewed hundreds of plans and this is what I have learned. 95 percent of estate plans are destined to fail. Part of the problem is that no one ever took the time to coordinate title and beneficiary designations with the estate plan.
Building in a regular review and updating process is what is needed. This gives assurance that your life and estate plan will work the way you intended, at the exact time when you need it to work.
That way you can be sure to protect yourself and your family and the investment you have made in the planning.
